Forest Circus at it again

Tucked in on the shores of Lake Wenatchee are a row of rustic cabins that were built long before this spectacular mountain lake became a recreation gold coast.

Most homeowners would welcome a spike in land value. But for the six families who own these cabins, an inverse real-estate calculus is in effect. Instead of profiting, they say they may soon have to abandon the cabins, leaving behind generations of memories.

The cabins are privately owned but are on land leased from the U.S. Forest Service. The agency recently sent notice that a long-delayed increase in annual lease fees is due — spiking fees up more than 1,000 percent, from $1,400 to more than $17,000.

Soaring Forest Service leases to drive families out of cabins they've had for generations

The U.S. Forest Service recently sent notice to Lake Wenatchee cabin owners that lease fees for the public land will spike more than 1,000 percent, from $1,400 to more than $17,000, by 2011. Some of the 14,500 cabin owners nationwide — including 2,800 in Washington and Oregon — say they'll simply walk away.

.......

Nobody should be getting a free ride at taxpayer expense!!! If they are going to give these folks cheapo leases, well then I should get one as well. The land should be accessed and leased at the prevailing rates.....

Exactly but how could that be the market rate for land you can't own and are highly restricted on what you can do with it.

As far as I can tell the real goal is get the private cabin owners to abandon the cabins nationwide. The FS has a different approach down here in Socal. They let fire do the dirty work. After the cabins are toast they make it difficult to rebuild.

Yeah sure seems like there goal. To be honest I doubt most people would even have one of these cabin's if there family hadn't been using it for decades. It's a pretty crappy deal if you ask me.

EXACTLY!!! :busted:

In my area the cabin owners can't put up a hammock between 2 trees 'cause it might hurt the tree. And they can't have horseshoe pits 'cause the stake might hurt the ground.

When are these environuts going to understand that not every American wants to "relax" in the city :busted:

I understand there is policy in some European countries that make it cost prohibitive to "holiday" out in the sticks (fuel taxes, public and private land use restrictions, etc) however this ISN'T europe . Why do those on the left (whom the greentards support) draw inspiration for their policy from the socialist Europeans and then try to cram it down the throats? AARRGGGHHHH!!!

Sorry for the rant

I wrote up this long response to your brilliant and insightful comment .

Since I’m part owner in a USFS cabin myself, and know quite a bit about this unfortunate situation, I thought I’d try to educate you a little…

maybe list Some facts and reasons behind what the forest service is doing...etc

but then I thought… why bother... your lame comment has a direct link to that picture in your avatar, and I knew that it was rather pointless to post it.

Good luck with that.
