new z400 breakin

Recommended Posts

I am a bran new 2005 z400 owner and i have a few questions:

1. Break in tips for better power

2. Fuel type 87 or high octane fuel

3. I am 300lbs and have the rear mono shock set at the max without making the bike springy, I think the front shocks are cool but I am worried about the rear mono shock any suggestions on a new type or mod to help me w/ jumping and trial riding. I am not racing this bike but I am aggressive and like to go big.

4. I am planning to put the k&n air filter and lid on soon and jet it up I might buy a pipe but I have no clue witch to buy I was thinking of going with a albba or fmf pipe but not sure. I don't want to spend a lot of the pipe but I don’t want it to suck

5. Any other tips and trick I should know about my bike

thanks for any info

i have used the "break it in hard" method on my last several machines, and it has worked well. (http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm)

Run dino oil during break-in, then switch to Maxima Extra Ester Synthetic (http://www.thumperfaq.com/oil.htm).

I run 89 octane, just to hedge my bets a little against detonation. Running race gas would be a waste.

I have a WorksPerformance Ultracross rear shock on mine, and Steelers with cans in front. Highly recommended! They will build them specifically for your weight and riding style.

Get the EHS Racing lid (http://www.ehsracing.com/), rather than the K&N! And, get the Pro Design foam filter kit (http://www.prodesignracing.com/).

I run the FMF Factory 4 header and muffler.

Get a steering damper.

Congrat's on the new Z! :bonk:

To be honest with you, This Z engine you have will last about anything you put it through so i'd go ahead and do recon ranger's "Break it in hard" method.

The fuel ?, I have always ran 93 and higher in mine. Even in your manual it should say run 91 and ^.

Since its an 05, DO NOT EVEN RIDE IT YET!!!! drain that sh!t coolant that comes factory and refil it with the genuine suzuki coolant. cases have been going through all kinds of bullcrap for the 05 and ^ models.

For your pipe question, I wish you would have had this thing when the Rossier was still made, They had a full system for 320$ through TT. now if you look around there is a pipe on ebay and its a full system loud as hell for 250 BIN. And there's always if you want the best of the best... Yoshimura. the K&N idea is good, the lid though i wouldnt waste my money on. Drill a few 1 1\2'' air holes in the stock air lid and save your self the extra 60 bucks. I rode mainly trails on mine and I had the white brothers E series Slip on w\ the FMF powerbomb header. Worked great for me.

The rear shock, Well it can be re-valved to be a competition shock. the fronts can also be done this way.

Congrats on the new bike and if you need anymore information on it, Check out www.Z400central.com :bonk:

thanks for the info,

i saw that in the "z" manual to about the 87 octane. in a car if you have 11.2:1 compresion you are running high grade not pump gas.

i am planing on doing the "break it in hard" method, its more fun :bonk:

questions: when should get the air box lid and when do i rejet, after break in. or during.
