2001 Service honda 500AF

Recommended Posts

Hey guys i'm about to jump on this chance to pickup a 2001 500af street legal for $3,000. Anything i should know about the 2001? I'm pretty familiar with steelies but this would be my first AF. What do you guys think should i jump on it? I thought 3,000 seemed cheap for a service honda, so I'm alittle concerned there might be major issues, but the only way to find out is to drive 200 miles and inspect it for myself.

Was it built in 01? Sounds like a pretty good deal to me, compared to the $12,000 they cost new. But, no matter what year Service Honda 500 AF you buy, it will be with a 2001 500 motor.

Yea built in '01 on a 250 frame, any trouble areas/weak spots on the AF I should be looking for? Besides the basics..

Shouldn't be any major problems.Just do an ordinary check of everything.Make sure it is a service honda modded bike not some scary home brew. Some guys at home do good builds but some don't.Keep us posted on how you do.:moon:

Should be fine. Only issues I can think of is that it's not a "real" Service Honda or the motor is hurtin'. If it's the latter, it's still worth $3k, easy. If the former is a problem, depends on the quality of the build.

I second what the last guy said.

There are alot of Service Honda clones out there some good some bad. Verify it is an actual Service Honda and if it is go for it.

A clone was also one of my worries, but the guy said he purchased it new in 01' and still has the service honda build sheet. Can't be much better proof than that:thumbsup: I'm just waiting to hear back from him and hopefully will be coming home with a new bike this weekend.

Picked it up today with a clean street title and it had all the proper service honda paperwork::moon::cheers:

Bike had a few small issues, going to need a new pipe and the rim has a huge dent.

The guy threw in a 21'' wheel in mint shape so all i really need is the pipe and to setup the bars with a riser and some fatty bars.

Got a whole box of goodies also, air filters, sprockets, clutch/brake lines a rear fender(with bajadesigns tail light) and a headlight.

Did my best to pull the dents out the pipe with an automotive dent puller, re welded all the factory spots(most of them were leaking) and gave it a few coats of 1600deg paint, didn't turn out half bad honestly:thumbsup:

Gotta show off my perfect welds:lol::moon:

My cylinder isn't in the greatest shape, but i'm not going to rebuild it this year. Next winter ill go right through it and powder coat everything.. I was thinking a gold/bronze color or something for the engine case/jug, maybe next year when i can save up some cash.

Pull the reed cage and look at the bottom of the piston skirt, they crack at the bottom and head upwards until........................Boom. The inside of your barrel does not look that great, I would do the top end now.

Repack your silencer

+1 on everything. That doesn't look pretty, I'd put a top end in there before I rode it again. You'll probably be in for a nasty surprise when you pull the reeds, too.

I hate you!:moon:

Actually I'm just jealous.

You should convert it to the 02-07 plastics, that would be sweet! :smirk:
