Spanner nut on steering stem

Recommended Posts

I dis-assembled my front end to lube everything and I didn't note how the spanner nut came off.

It appears there is a top and bottom because the spanner nut has a collar/flange on one side which I guess allows it to seat.

Which side goes up?

2001 CR250

Thanks a bunch

I'm not 100% certain..... I think the end w/the step-down goes against the bearing. That gives the big flat side more surface area against the upper tree.

It doesn't have to be tight either.

Snug it down by hand while twisting the tree side-to-side. Use some pliers and add a small amount of preload to it.

If it feels "notchy" when you rotate the shaft, it's too tight.

I'll have to check an online breakdwon, or I can check one of my service books tomorrow.

Thanks for the reply, that does make sence.

I looked on a micro-fiche but it wasn't detailed enough for me to tell one side from the other.

Just for the record, I do have a service manual but I move about every 6 months to a year so it isn't lost but really misplaced.
