I know the size 18 mm. I havent found one that has walls thin enough to fit in the very tight opening

Gotcha. Would just a deep socket from Sears work? You could put your own foam padding in there to protect the plug.

Something like this:

===> http://hand-tools.hardwarestore.com/22-401-sockets-metric-3-8-dr/3-8-drive-18-mm-deep-socket-6-point-612980.aspx

There must be dozens of folks on this forum that know the answer . . . .

I have yet to find a plug wrench that works better in XRs than the OEM stamped POS one. Honda made it so tight in there the socket has to be very thin walled.

None of the deep sockets I own will work, the OD is still to large even with thinwall sockets.

That's just great. :ride: And how much does that socket cost?

I just buy the 18/19mm Medalist tube spanners for $2.99 and hack the 19mm end off just above the hole so I can get it in there..It's to long without the hack job.You could hack it shorter and drill another hole for optimum length..It's on page 2 of that url/site posted above if you're interested..You need Java on to view things at SuperCheap..Maybe I should buy a hundred of them and start selling them as a standard Honda 250/350/400/500/600/650 tool,,,LoL

ive been using a regular craftsman deep socket for years...

when i had my xr250 people were telling me only the oem wrench worked but i could fit my craftsman deep well in just fine, now with the 650 i can only get the oem to fit. the very same craftsman socket that fit the 250 wouldnt work with my 650. Only thing i can figure is that the castings are slightly different from bike to bike?

Thank you for all your collective input, A few options are better than trying one cheap socket after another. Crash

I've got a craftsman 6 pt 18mm and a 3" extension that I can fit down in there. Once in I can attach the ratchet and loosen the plug, but you have to remove the ratchet before you back the plug out too much, otherwise you back it up against the frame and can't get anything out.

Because of this, I always use the stock POS-looking stamped tool. It's just more convienient.
