Choice of 4 stroke 38mm carburetors from the 80s

Hello all, I am rebuilding a 1981 XR500R, fitting it with a whole lot of period mods.

I am looking to feed the 535cc rebored - Wiseco HC - WB + Supertrapp exhaust and soon megacycle camshaft engine with a 38mm carb.

I have tried carbs coming off 2 stroke bikes but was never satisfied. I dont really want to go down the dual carburetor route either (just sounds too complicated, but may be one off a XT550 could be the solution...?).

The practical choice would be to go for one off a Suzuki DR650 but, the period gap is too big. would prefer to stay in the spirit of the 80s.

Can you advise what the choice of 38mm carbs was in the 80s. Thank you.

Ah, no the XT550 is a dual carb.

i know its not cool looking, but you will be shocked how well it works..........

find the stock cv carb from a drz 400 (36mm) or dr650 (40mm).

it will run better than any carb form the era you are looking for.

Ah thanks for that. I probably have to accept that modern is better. Are these flat or round slide?

the carb Eddie said to use is a CV carb.

You could look for a PD carb. they are early round slide pumper carbs. They were used on XR's.

Please forgive my ignorance, what do CV and PD mean? Thanks.
