xr250 rear shock

my xr250 is an '88 model, the rear shock has got a blue spring,

some time between my bikes manufacture and the major changes of '96

the colour of the spring changed to red, anyone know if its exactly the

same,but painted a different colour,or is it possibly different/improved,

just wondering cuz i see quite a few pre '96 red spring units for sale on ebay,

and thought it might be a cheap upgrade, obviously if they are the same i

wont bother,

thanks nick

Interesting, is the spring red or orange? Maybe a faded red?

I have some XR250 springs from 3 differnt years and I thought the 86-95 springs were all the same color, my 95 spring is blue. The 96-03 spring should also be the same color, my 03 spring is yellow. I have two orange springs; a 84 XR250 and a 90 XR200. Although they have slightly differnent lengths and diameters all of the springs will interchange, but they do have different rates; I calculated the orange XR250 at 10.7kg, the orange XR200 at 11.1kg, the blue at 10.4kg, the yellow at 11.6kg. I just installed the yellow spring on my 90 XR200 to replace an orange XR200 spring for a slight increase in spring rate.

So color can be an indicator but is not absolute because I have two orange XR springs that calculate at different rates; the 90 XR200 at 11.1kg and the 84 XR250 at 10.7kg.

Hope this helps.

thanks for the reply chuck,

me and my mate have both got old xr250's

his is '87 mines '88 both have blue springs,

recently the seal gave out on my mates shock,

after getting a quote of gbp95 to fix it decided to

take a chance on a used shock off ebay, and he

found a real nice one off a '95 bike for £49

well after having a go on his bike ,fitted with the new

shock,it definetly feels better than mine, and i thought i had mine

set up pretty good, maybe its just because my mates new

shock has hardly had any use, there is barely a scratch on it,

and mine has 20+ years of abuse,or it could just be a better shock,

still not sure, and yea it is a red spring not faded orange.

hey, I have an 86 and an 87 xr250r-- the 86 has a red spring and the 87 has a blue spring- both seem a bit soft for me, even with a good amount of preload. one shock is leaking oil around the shaft- blown i imagine. what years of xr's have the same shock? I might go the same route as your friend?

hiya steve, anything from '86 upto and including '95 will fit

ok, thanks for the info, Nick. I'll check ebay to see what I can find.

just bought a brand new '95 shock, never been fitted to a bike,

still in the box,£52 on ebay, very pleased with myself :ride::ride:

84-85

86-95

96-03

they all use the same size mount bolts but are different lenghts so will not interchange.

Even a new spring that you order should be put on a spring dyno and double checked for rate. If you use a good suspension shop for your work they will be happy to check them
