Sam Houston Forest - TX Ride Report

Howdy! Sam Houston National Forest made a great dual sport destination for KosmicKLR, DoctorDR and our fellow HellBuellie John on his ULY. We slabbed it out of Austin on for an hour, branched of on to secondary paved roads for an hour and finished the last hour on smooth gravel county roads. We had some decent rain, so the wildflowers were doing the deed! Sam Houston has 80 miles of OHV trails that are sandy, with whoops, mud holes, berms and all.

I sweated my brains out, and my legs and concentration were giving out on the trails, but it was still a blast,

even though I spent the whole time in second gear. It was a big reminder that the TAT is going to be a very

physically challenging ride. So, more spin-bike, crunches and push-ups are in order!

The company was excellent, our new friend John was easy going, interesting and a pleasure to spend ride

and camp with. My brother got his first taste of sandy and muddy trails, which was good for practicing some skills

for the TAT, and it was wonderful to share a new interest in dualsport riding with him.

I am getting hooked on GPS too. The ability to search out dirt roads, draw tracks, and print maps

from the comfort of your home is absolutely incredible. It made the ride possible, because I would

have never found the dirt roads otherwise.

Here are my photos, followed by DoctorDR's in a slide show.
