What's the story behind John Dowd ?

I saw some sites vaguely saying he started rising in his 20's but is there anything mroe in-depth ?

Did he JUST first start riding bikes in his 20'ss? Or rode his life life and just started racing in his 20's?

Why did he wait so long to race ?

His records include being the oldest rider to win an AMA National (Southwick 125cc, 1998), oldest rider to win a Supercross championship (125cc West, 1998), oldest rider to win a National moto (Mt. dowd podiumed last year at the wick. Im not sure when dowd started riding but i know he turned pro in '86 so that would make him 21.

I guess I need to re-phrase what I said. John Dowd got his AMA pro license in 1986. But he didn't race his first pro race until 1999, at Anaheim.
