There should be timing marks on the stator back plate and the case. If not there will also be a mark on the flywheel that lines up with a mark on the stator somewhere(like the pulse coil)Those should line up when the piston is about 1.2mm Before top dead center.Take a timing light to be sure the marks are 'true' then use a dial indicator in the spark plug hole.Set TDC of the piston at zero, back it off (the crank)1.2mm on the dial, then look at your lines, they should be lined up.

Clear as mud?...

Most bikes WILL have a 3 lines on the stator\case.Simply use the middle one.

The case also might have a "pointer"or triangle that will point at marks on the stator plate..

Look close..

Like i said, most bikes will have marks...either from the factory or someone has put them there. My MX250 restore this year had NO marks.I was very surprised! Had to break out the ol dial indicator and timing light.
