free play in clutch, what is it? how do I adjust it?

Recommended Posts

my bike was in the shop and the mechanic happened to pull my clutch lever. he said I need some freeplay in it so it doesnt burn out the clutch.. now im scared im damaging the clutch while I ride!!

new barnett clutch basket and plates.

the clutch engages perfect, and when I pull it in, it actually goes to neutral and doesnt try to still walk forward!!

im assuming free play is letting slack off the clutch plates.. or having my lever able to move a little bit without engaging the clutch, right? so basically all I have to do it loosen the cable a little bit?

just want to confirm. thanks.

Yes, you need a little bit of slack in the cable or the clutch gets fried. Rule of thumb: you should be able to fit a nickel between the lever and perch without the actuator arm moving. Just set it with the quick adjust on the perch.
