Bottom ending swap 97 to 90 XR80

1990 is a complete running bike. 1997 is a parts bike. Can I do this? Seems the only diff is the 97 has a cdi and the 90 has a coil. Can I take the flywheel off the 90 and move it to the 97, hook it to the coil and be done with it? Is this kind of jump back in time workable or not?

It is possible, but here's the problem. 1992-up has a thicker flywheel key. You could try to run with no key, but you would have to line up the slots. Your other option is to swap cranks.

I think you may need to restate what your trying to do. What you want to do doesn't make sense.

I want to use the 90 electronics on the 97 motor.

Sorry, I did not look closely at you question. You can't just swap flywheels, you need to transfer all electronics. 1992-up CDI, 1991-below points. Why do you want to do this again? CDI is virtually troublefree and reliable.

The backing plates are different and the key size is different. I'm a bit confused too.

What happened to the cdi on the 97?.........you really don't want to go back in time.

Basically I wanted to swap bottom ends but use the 90 stuff. The 97 has no CDI which is why I was wondering if the bottoms were interchangeable. Anybody have an idea of what a replacement cdi would be?
