I'm riding a 2001 KTM 520MXC and still think its one of the best bike ever made. I was just looking to see if there were any others out there still riding and if they've added or changed anything. Is the 525 that much better and is the 530 that much better than that?

Welcome to KTMTalk.

The 525 engine has nothing on the 520. My friend is still riding my old '02 520 EXC and after 15,000+ miles it is still going strong.

has he made any modifications? I bought mine from a friend with a pro-circuit pipe aleady on it. I don't know how they ran stock but I love this machine.

arent the 520, 525, and 530 all actually 510s anyway? I have an 00 520 SX and an 05 525 EXC. Probably the best 2 bikes Ive ever owned.

I know my 2010 (9.5) 530 exc is actually a 510. I am sure you are correct about the others too.

They are all 510cc.

they are all 510cc and the 520/525 motors are all the rfs engine with minor differences between years, but a few.

the 530 is the new xc4 motor and is a completely different motor but of the same size displacement

I bought a 02 EXC 520 in 02 and rode it till I bought my 08 EXC 530. Kept the 520 for a back up bike.

The 520 was an awesome bike. Right off idle and all the way through the gears. The only mods were an inch and a quater off each end of the bars, 3 gallon tank, a couple of skid plates and a dozen or so hand guard covers. O-yea and making it street legal. Tried gearing but allways went back to stock.

The difference between the 520 and 530, motor wise is the lack of low end grunt in the later bike. I still miss the 520, but got used to the 530.

I have an 02 exc that i love as well. As for mods. I run pc Ti4 exhaust when open des and supermoto. Stock is smoother for single track off road. I also picked up the 07 subframe tank and all the other stuff needed to make the update. Looks like the 07 to all but the true ktm gurus that notice the other cahnges that the newer bikes have. It was mostly cosmetic but it did flatten out the seating posistion (which I like). Some prefer the feel of the sit in rather than sit on ergos that the pre 04s had. I have my suspension set up to my liking but my next move will def be suspension valving. I also have a scotts stabilizer (i.m.o. by far the best mod that can be added to a offroad bike). Keep on riding the rfs and do handling updates and upgrades if you want to improve on the perfection you already have.

I'm another very happy '02 520 EXC owner. I went to 14/50 on the gearing and it is still way fast enough for me. After riding a '94 XR 600 for 8 years, the 520 felt like I was cheating. Great bike, probably the best bike I've ever ridden.

I also am just as happy with my '06 300 XCW, but this being a socialist state I can't ride it year round. But I think I'm just as happy on either bike.

deano, the 300xcw is a red sticker bike? i thought that moel might have been green still.

either way, have you looked at the map for red and green sticker land use?

the map is pretty good. i think it follows a pattern alot of us use already. in so cal you can ride glamis and ocotillo thru the fall till spring, you cant ride there in the summer, no problem, who wants to ride in 120 degree weather. then it is a floating chart that pretty much follows the good riding weather. you cant ride in snow covered areas in the winter and so on.

i hate the fact that there is restrictions at all, but, there are livable in reality

Yeah, I have the green/red sticker areas and dates saved. My driveway to the first staging area at Rowher Flats is 10 miles even, so I like to ride there for convenience.

I have two brothers in CO, so I ride there a lot and we manage to meet in UT (Green River area and Moab) a couple times a year. So I get year round time on the 300, I just have to drive for it.

Either bike is a gas to ride. If there are dirt roads to travel between trails, the 520 is king. All tight trails brings out the 300. Both climb hills with ease.

Retirement rules...so do decisions like...the 300 today or the 520...what will it be?

Great Bike.... if there was a good reason to buy a newer year I would. The thing is a very good trail/race bike. You may consider.

1. EE Seat

2. Fork work

3. Going on very long rides!
