Front Brake Caliper Spring Pad

I had my front wheel off and I put new brake pads in the front and I could not get the pads in without the spring pad, is the spring pad a crutial part of the front braking system or will I be ok without it?

If you do not no understand what part I am talking about here is a schematic (the part is #6)

I was getting so frustrated I have changed many break pads but I could not get this one in with out that spring pad. So I see how it works.
