KLX 650 lights don't come on

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I just picked up this beautiful KLX 650R that's been converted to street using a Baja Designs kit. Recently the headlights started fading in and out and the blinkers stopped working altogether. I replaced the bulbs in the headlight (I'm using a Acerbis DHH headlight setup) and the signal flasher, but still nothing. No lights, no brake lights, no turn signals. The bike fires up just fine and will run all day just no lights anywhere. Any advice? Thanks -Lance

The ignition and lighting windings on the stator are separate circuits, that's why the bike runs ok. The problem is in the lighting circuit somewhere.

When lights fade in and out, it's often caused by loose/frayed wiring, corroded electrical connectors and ground points. This is kickstart only, right?

I'd trace out all wiring and connections and check everything. If there are any fuses, check them. Next culprit I would suspect would be the regulator/rectifier.

What year and model KLX650 is this?

The person that installed the kit could have put the reg/rec anywhere. Most likely under the tank somewhere, possibly mounted to the main frame tube.

Does this bike have a battery?

Find yourself a shop manual. In the interim, take a look at the schematics here for your bike to see how things are arranged.

it's a 97'. It does have a battery although it doesnt look like a standard motorcycle battery. It looks like a bunch of AA batteries all lined up in two rows. Never seen that before. Anyway, there is something called a "set assy" made by Nippondenso right under the seat. Maybe some sort of relay? I dunno it looks electrical and anything that looks like it has wires coming to it or from it is suspect to me :-) Thanks for the link I'm gonna check it out. BTW: what does the regulater/rectifier look like? Thanks again!

The batt packs sounds like the BD pack.

Here's a picture of the reg/rec.

The Nippon part is probably stock. Take a look at the parts schematic here to compare it and see what it is.

'96 is the latest year I can find a parts fiche for.
