Silly Front Sprocket question

Recommended Posts

Replacing the front sprocket.

I don't think the c-clip is the correct size, or somehow it's been stretched.

Shouldn't this thing fit into the recess completely? It seems like when it's in the recess at both "ends" where it's open, on the opposite end it's not fully seated. Also, does the flat side of the sprocket go toward the cases or vice versa?

Something so simple shouldn't be such a pita!

The clip for my sprocket doesn't fit that well either, it has quite a bit of play but it's never fallen off.

The flatter side faces outwards, at least on my bike.

Last night as I was falling asleep, it hit me that it must face that way or there'd be no clearance between the sprocket tips and the case for the chain.

Glad to know my clip isn't the only one that doesn't fit like I'd think it should.

How much is a new one, and is it worth not getting one and taking a chance on the old one falling off? I would get a new one, and one for a spare.

You can also get them from fastenal for about a buck. I have 3 or 4 of them because I just figure I will replace it everytime I remove/replace the sprocket.
