Installing main bearings

Recommended Posts

I need to install the main crank bearings on my 01 yz 250 and i was planning on heating the oven to 350F (on bake right?) then throwing the engine in for 10 mins to expand it then drop in my new bearing which have been chillin in the freezer for a while. Before i throw my engine in the oven, do i need to remove the other bearings like the transmissions bearings and stuff before it goes in? or can they take the heat?

Personally, I would just use a propane torch to get the case heated up. Works a lot faster, and the entire case doesn't get hot which helps holding it.

Yep, no need to heat it up that much.

You only want it about 200*F - just enough so that water sizzles a bit when you drip it on there.

I just did that on vintage bike today. The bearings fell in. I did the crank too. Heated the bearing til water sizzled, crank in the freezer 1 hr and it fell in too. Easy and cheap.
