How to remove, and replace tank insert.

Recommended Posts

The bolt that holds the shroud on would not come out and I could not figure out why. The other day it pissed me off enough that i just got a pocket knife and cut the plastic as closely around the bolt as i could till it finally pulled through. I found that the metal insert in the tank was spinning in the tank, thus not letting the bolt be backed out.

Most people were telling me to use an impact to spin the bolt and the insert so it would heat the plastic surrounding it enough so I could just pull it out.

BUUT the head on my bolt was torn up badly from me trying to yank it out, so instead i got a drill bit and drilled down the center of the bolt till I got to the bottom and by that time the plastic was melted enough that i could just pull the insert and bolt out all together.

The tank was a little rough on the edges from where the plastic was melted, so I cleaned it up a little, and smoothed the inside of the hole out with the drill bit. I then mixed some epoxy up, and put a big glob down in the hole.

I made sure I put enough in so when i put the insert in it would make it over flow, and fill the whole hole up nicely. Try to set the insert at the same angle as it was when you took it out. You can find out the angle by just looking at the same insert on the other side.

Once dry, scrape away all the extra, unneeded epoxy with a knife, and you should be good to go. :ride:

Hopefully this helps someone

I think I have one spinning in my tank (I just pulled the tank and left the shrouds on for now). Thanks for the tip if it comes to replacing the insert.
