OK the last new bike I had was a 1989 KX 125 so I have never owned a 4 stroke before. I went and got a new 2007 RM 450. My question is when I start it and let it warm up the pipe turns bright red. Is this normal do 4 strokes run that much hotter?

That'd be an RM-Z 450. And not sure if they run hotter in temp as compared to a 2 stroke, but it is sometimes normal for a header pipe to glow red on a 4 stroke. You may want to check for an air leak. The most common place for this is the carb boot. A simple loose screw on your boot clamp can cause too much air to get to the engine causing the bike to run lean which in turn causes it to run HOT and thus you see a glowing header pipe.

Any thumper left idling will end up with a glowing header. Don't do it.

Welcome to 1998, BTW.
