Possible jetting problem with SSW/MRD...

Recommended Posts

Please and thank you for any help

Just installed my SSW/MRD for my 07 SM the other night.

3x3

K&N

New SSW/MRD

JD Jet Kit

Brisk Spark plug

All stock other then that!

Sea-Level!

I used Eddie's jetting...

160 main jet

JD Blue

Clip 4 (4th down from the flat end painted blue)

Stock Pilot jet with the extended screw (Keintech)

2.75 turns (2.75 out from screwed all the way in)

Problem is within about 10 minutes of idle (needed to juice up the battery) The header starting at the exhaust port was faintly glowing it was so hot. So I gave it a few revs through the range to see how it sounded and how loud it was, and the thing was glowing orange hot, my tool maker buddy thought it might have been about 2200 degrees so I killed it before we melted/wrecked anything. It was really, really hot.

Is it too lean?

Where did we go wrong?

What you experienced is fairly common and pretty normal. You just let it run too long sitting still. Next time warm it up for a minute or two then hop on and go for a ride.

It's fairly common to have the thing so hot you can't stop riding or you will overheat it?

Or does the air running over it provide enough cooling that it does not get glowing orange hot so long as you keep riding?

If you fall and catch something on the glowing orange steel...

You can stop riding, but if your going to stop for 10 minutes you should shut it down. Idling for 10 minutes is excessive. These bikes need to move to cool effectively. Once moving it will be fine.

With the fan on the SM, sitting in traffic has never been a problem.

Thank you for the replies!
