09 450 exc and the oil sight glass

Recommended Posts

I just got off the phone with HT racing, and he said that he keeps his 450 exc at 1/8 of the sight glass to just below 1/2. Never above 1/2 the sight glass, his words. This is after letting it sit overnight to cool off and let the oil collect. He said it doesn't matter whether it's stock or with his oil cooler. Certainly that's lower than the manual's instructions, not that I trust manuals all that much anymore.

What do ya'll think about that?

i wonder what his reasons would be for keeping the oil low rather than high?????

i run mine at the upper part of the site glass. it hasnt caused any smoking or burning of oil problems, and i figure the more oil the better right, when you only have a total of 600cc's to start with i figure an cc is a good cc...???

when i do an oil change i never go by the sight glass i just measure out the amount of oil and dump it in. allot of people say to put in 500cc instead of the 600cc the manuel calls for.

HELLLLLOOOOO mcfly....anyone know why LESS oil is better?? i know there is definately a point of overful where you start burning it or belching it out but up to that point...isnt more oil good????? isnt that the big complaint with the xc4 motor is not ENOUGH oil capacity?

why run it even lower that the factory says

Yeah he said they'd done some testing with different oil levels etc. He claimed that people fill the sight glass and then think they're burning oil when in fact it's just getting belched.

Of course, too much oil causes the pressure inside to be too high which isn't good.

my 02 says to run the the oil at the bottom of the sight glass ( cold) and it should be near the upper part when warm

i stopped by ncy today and asked one of the ktm guys there and at 3bros, they both said the only reason some guys like to run the oil low is that there is alot of drag on the crank if the oil is high and that makes it drag on the starter and the battery.

if your bike starts ok with the oil at the middle of the sight glass or higher....leave it there imho

When I purchased my 09 EXC450 the oil was way overfull. Had to almost lay the bike over down to the right to even see the top of the oil level. After getting it back from the first service at the dealer, I still have to lean the bike over to the right, but not as far to see the oil level. The factory and the dealer both have overfilled the crankcase but I have not had any problems. What's with that!
