Recommended Posts

Heres the story...

my friends uncle recently based away... he had a '96 XR 400R that had been uncorked. i went to clean the carb out cause it sat for a couple of years. after pulling out the jets and giving them a thorough cleaning i put every thing back together... it started!!! but only with the choke on full... as soon as i turn it to half choke it cuts out. i no these beasts are cold blooded but it starts to over heat... i think it the adjustable fuel air jet or the pilot jet... plz help!!

You need to pull the fuel screw(on the front side of the float bowl) and clean out that passage. Be sure to account for all the parts.....screw, spring, washer, o-ring in that order. I guess you dumped all the old gas? You should probably disassemble and clean the whole carb, not just the jets.

No need to switch it to half choke immediately. Listen to the engine. It will let you know when you need to back off the choke to half.
