KX 500 Stripped threads in oil drain

I have an 1989 KX 500 that I have owned for 15+ years. Unfortunately the last time I changed tranny oil the drain plug thread stripped in the engine case. The threads on the bolt are fine.

I have heard of people using a thread "insert" to solve this problem. My question is how good are these? The motor is in good shape other wise, very low hours for its age and has a fresh top end. Should I order new cases and fix it "right" or do the inserts hold up well.

This is a bike I plan to keep as sort of a "collector" bike but I do ride it occasionally just for fun. I have a 450 for racing and serious play riding.

I have had one on my '91 500 for several years with no problem. They hold up because the wear points are metal-to-metal.

Thanks for the info. I hate to split the cases on an otherwise good motor so this sounds like the answer.
