So I bought a FMF 4.1 Carbon Fiber Exhaust for my YZ450 off ebay.

Got a great price.

Come to find out that it needs to be repacked.

How much does FMF charge for the carbon repacking kit, you ask??

$60!!!!

I called FMF and they said that if I dont use that one, I run the risk of not only burning out the packing faster, but that it can heat the pipe up too much and crack the CF!

Any experience? If this is the case, it may have to go right back on ebay!

Soooo..... REPACK IT! Its a cheap investment. Sounds better, and performs better. I dont see a problem here.

The problem lies in the fact that it costs $60 for the repacking!

The universal FMF 4T packing is $10.

I cant afford to spend 6x the amount of money each time I need to repack (which FMF suggests at 15-20 hours)

I wouldn't worry about it, the CF will fall apart soon anyhow. Just repack with regular stuff. The reason people get good prices on CF mufflers is that they are crap in terms of lifespan.

Hmmm. Maybe I should resell it then! I also got a smokin' deal on a DRD header and exhaust.

I hear the DRD is supposed to be pretty awesome?! Any info on them?

Here's what will happen:

You'll pay the $60 to buy the repacking kit from FMF and you'll repack it.

Then, you'll wreck and crack the CF silencer and have to replace it.

Then you'll buy a normal one that requires a $10 repack kit and you'll be happier.

Don't forget the CF one is louder and sounds liek crap too!

Never buy a CF muffler or a titanium header, both are too weak and dont stand up to crashes like the stainless headers and aluminum mufflers. Many people think titanium is stronger than stainless steel which is not true at all, the strength to weight ratio may be higher, but they still dent much easier than steel especially when hot.

Check out the moose cartridges. They're usually like $25 or so and you just slide them in.
