crf450x valves marks confusion

Recommended Posts

Yesterday i had planed to make the valves of my 07 450x .

With the crankshaft hole cap removed i turned the crank until the punch alingn this the mark on the cover .

Checked on the other side the T on the flywheel . and ...No marks on side.

I have made valves many times and always double check mark on flywheel and crankshaft.and cam.

Now

The cam marks ,the lobes of the cam ,the piston -checked from the sparkplug hole all

was right the flywheel marks .

the mark on the crank was 45 " about before .

One month before i had my bike on a local shop to check it because the starter had stuck and i want to check the starter gear

They had primary drive gear off the bike .

Is this possible to primary drive gear to be in other possision than one ?

If not what have happened?

The bike work with no problems .

And lastly I have made valves -new shims - with the marks on the flywheel

and the bike works perfect .

thanks

the shop could have put the primary gear on backwards. thatll look like the timing is wayyyy off, but in reality, the mark your trying to time with, is the back side of the gear, and also some good amount of "degrees" away from the actual timing mark. good luck

EDIT: oh ya.....please dont ask how i know this...............

Sorry for my English.

The mark on the crankshaft with the mark on the flywheel arent keeping with .

Or else are different.

With the piston on TDC

the cam is ok the flywheel mark is ok BUT

THE mark on the primary gear isnt align with the mark on the cover.

The question now is:

the primary gear is it possible to put on the crancshaft on the other side ,

and has it marks (punch) on both sides?

Thanks

I don't think there are punch marks on both sides, but I've never had mine off.

The manual has a note that says to make sure to mount the primary gear with the punch mark out.

there are 2 marks. the actual punchmark for timing, then the other side has like a divvet that resembles a timing mark. believe me, i f'd around with that problem for a while before i figured it out. that was a long time ago.........

The primary gear and the counterbalancer gear both have to be put on thier respective shafts in the proper spot, furthermore the two gears (primary and counterbalancer)have to be timed with each other as well.

If the shop did disassemble the primary assy its quite possible it was re-assembled incorrectly, at least thats what it sounds like.

Once the primary assy is correctly installed you can set the flywheel and primary gear marks to mark TDC.

At that point the cam and cam gear need to be installed with its marks in the proper spot to ensure TDC of the "compression stroke".

I highly suggest a look at a service manual, its not that hard if you have a book for refrence.

Thanks dstollys for the info .

You are correct.

I open the side cover and....

Threre are punch marks on both sides in the same places mirrored.

But One side has one more little punch mark .

So the side with 2 mark is the right side.
