09 sm with 2200 miles. Since day 1 makes a slight ticking noise in the top end, not louder with rpm.?? Recently it has started making a noise on the left side of the motor when i lean the bike to the right. No noise leaned to the left or straight up, only when leaned to the right. Noticable when riding. Ive read all the fixes and have done none b/c im under warranty. Any idea of what that noise might be or has anyone had similar problem. Saw one thread on this and dealer said clutch.

i am a little extreme when it comes to concern that my bike is rideable but the new noise is not paranoia. ive had few friends listen and hold the bike so i can listen. pulled of the stator cover and did the fixes last nite. not the problem. noise is coming from the front left side of the crankcase as far as i can tell. sounds like a bearing under a bind or loose. not real loud but noticable when riding. very consistent and it sounds kinda like a chain maybe rubbing the case or something. ANOTHER THING ABOUT ME IS THIS IS MY FIRST FOURSTROKE. NOT USED TO ALL THE NOISE. 2 STROKES ARE JUST SO QUIET AND EASY TO DETERMINE PROBLEMS. I BUILT A 90 HP STROKER BANSHEE MOTOR 6 YEARS AGO AND IT STILL IS THE FASTEST IN THE COUNTY TO THIS DAY AND IS AS STRONG AS THE DAY I BUILT IT. NOT SURE WHY MY 6 MONTH OLD DR-Z IS SO NOISEY. PLEASE GIVE ME AN IDEA OF WHAT THIS MIHGT BE. I HAVE A SERVICE MANUAL AND NO PROBLEM TAKING THIS THING APART. JUST WANNA KNOW ALL I CAN BEFORE I BREAK HER DOWN.

anybody out there have this problem. further inspection sound like its coming from the starter clutch. both bushings are in and in good condition. should i take the starter clutch out and bump start it to see if thats the area of concern or will that damage something. that would tell me if the noise was in the starter clutch cluster.

i have the same sound on my 01 drz400e. when the bike is straight up and down, no noise, but when i lean it to the rt. i hear a noise, like the starter gear is freewheeling on the flywheel(?). its definatly in the starter area. i tip it back up straight, the noise goes away. no noise when i tip it to the left. it actually went away once or twice when i did the "tip to the rt" test, but its back now. im guessing ite a weak spring or a thrust washer that didnt go back on after a removal/starter rebuild but ive never had it off or even looked @ the parts diagram in the manual so my oppinion is purely speculation. id love to know if and how anyone has rectified this issue

I noticed in the GS500F I just rebuilt the stater clutch has alot of end play (floating back & forth) if the DRZ is the same way that's probably it. I dought that it's a problem other than noise. The thumpers have balance shaft, cam/valve train, timing chain and when you add a starter clutch/gears there's alot of potential noises...compared to a simple 2 smoke that usually just gets piston slap when worn.

No idea.... but mine is the same. Sometimes it will tick when cold or when hot and other times it wont tick when cold or hot. Sometimes it will stop when I am stopped, other times it will tick away while I am sitting at a light. I am super anal and I was a bit freaked out at first, but I have come to live with it even though it still drives me nuts. I have only done one oil change since I got the bike, and it does it quite a bit more often now. I dont know if it's because I went to full synthetic or because I am using a lighter weight oil than the dealer had in it.

hey i see that youre new to the forum. i found this forum 1 mth ago because i did a serch on "noisey bot end", "engine noise", etc. it eased my mind greatly to see how just about all the drz400 owners stated that their engines were very loud and thats just how they are. top end noise, bot end noise, cam chain noise, just plain noisey. do a search in the drz400 forum and youll see. im going to put the manual cam chain tensioner on soon as this seems to be the general consensious that this is a manditory fix. looking forward to see if this quiets things down any. and fyi i think eddie recomends 20w/50 oil.

thanks guys for the help. mine still is making this noise and to me originally it did sound like the starter/stator area so i did the fixes and nothng changed. mine seams to be more noisy when the motor is warm and still when leaned to the right. my original thoughts were a washer of some sort. just havn't looked in my service manual enough to determine what it might be. after listenig several times i had some friends say it sounded like its coming from the front of the crankcase down low. anyway it doesnt seem to be getting worse just maintaining a steady rattle.

If you have a bash plate, its much quieter when you take it off!

thats what the specialist @ the suzuki shop told me too but theres no way its coming off in the terain im riding in. he also told me to put a piece of non absorbant foam between skid plate and engine. i tried it w/ copper pipe insulation foam and i didnt notice much of a difference if any. cant imagine filling that space helps keep the engine any cooler either.

I to have been a long time two stroke rider. My national record Kaw H1 500 dragbike seems to have less engine noise than my DRZ 400. That said i feel that this Suzuki motor has very thin engine cases to keep weight down. This seems to amplify internal noises. My 1979 XT 500 Yam which is air cooled also seems quieter. I say ride it and dont worry about it. So far ive put 2000 miles on my 2001e model, its a noisey motor but so far nothing has gone south. Since the weather has cooled down here in OH, I have been wearing a full face street style helmet which hides a lot of noise. Dirt Helmet? try ear plugs. Keep it on one wheel. Mitch
