2004 crf450r valving

so i know im gonna change out my springs but is valving necessary, i weigh 175 with all my gear on and i race c class mx

Valving is necessary if you don't like the way the standard set up handles the obstacles you encounter. Some bikes come stock with bad valving set ups and therefore need help in certain areas. But basically a revalve will "customize" the suspension to your riding style and the terrain you encounter. The first thing you want to do is get the proper springs for your weight. Next, I would suggest finding a suspension tuning guide. I think Dave J (Smart Performance) has one on his site and we have one at MX-Tech.com. Read through those and do your best to find a good setting with the available adjusters. If that doesn't cut it for you, then a revalve would be the next step.
