another bike wont start thread.

Recommended Posts

my friend brought down his 2005 rmz450 for the weekend and we couldn't get it to fire even after numerous bump start attempts. we checked the spark plug and it had good spark, and we cleaned the air filter to make sure it was getting a fresh air charge. and from the way it kicks over it doesn't seem to be a timing issue( also because it started fine last season) and we also swapped out the old gas from last season with fresh stuff. so we are assuming it has to be a carb problem. one thing we noticed is that when we turn the fuel pet cock on, and try to start it, and then turn the fuel pet cock off there is no fuel in the fuel line that goes from the fuel petcock to the carb. and we have confirmed that the fuel petcock is working we just don't think its drawing in any fuel. we don't have that much experience with cleaning carbs, so any one with an opinion on what to clean or maybe an alternative method of starting if you lend some expertise it would be appreciated.

Well it seems you singled out that it is the carb. So you are going to have to remove the carb to clean it. This is where the manual comes in. Take it apart slowly and be sure to know where things go back.

Pull the hose off the carb and open the petcock to see if it free flows into a catch can. Not sure if you meant you already did this. If it doesn't flow, the internal tank stick filter is jackeed up or there is water in the tank.

Drain the carb bowl. Might be water in there. If the tank wasn't full over the winter, they have a tendancy to accumulate water through condensation and as we know, water is heavier than gas, sinks to the bottom and then fills the bowl and then no start.
