Can exhaust leak cause backfiring?

I have have small amount of slop where the pipe goes into the muffler tightened it some and it seems to have helped some, does it need to be that sealed! White bros e2 seems kinda weak at the joint, jmo!

Hi ,

Is your exhaust stock , if it is you will need a gasket , not silicone sealeant.The stock gasket is made of graphite and crushes when you tighten the clamp to 15 ft lbs of torque according to the service manual.Now if it is an aftermarket systen, then slicone sealant is fine.
