chain tension

just wondering how tight/loose should the chain be on a bike and what is an easy way to check it

You should be able to fit 3 fingers between the chain and the rubber slider above the swingarm.

It varies from brand to brand. For example, the full size Honda CRF's use just 1" of slack, whereas KTM's run much more. If you don't have an Owner's manual, which you absolutely should, you can disconnect the shock linkage and raise the wheel to align the countershaft, swingarm pivot and rear axle. That's the tightest point in the stroke. Then adjust the chain to maintain 1/2-1" of slack at that point. Reinstall the shock linkage then note how tight the chain is at full suspension extension.
