Won't Start Cold

Recommended Posts

I have a 2005 CRF250X.

I have a hard time starting my bike cold.

With choke on, not with starter, not kicking. I have to push start it.

Once I have run it 10 minutes I can get it to start kicking it,

but not using starter (well sometimes, usually not).

Put a new plug in it that helped. Can barely see the spark.

Bad coil? Saw a few on ebay are the years interchangeable?

Is there someplace to by this new other than Honda dealership?

Thank you!

Try turning up the idle. Or.... sometimes I have to twist the throttle two or three times before I hit the button when it's cold. This gives her a little shot of gas from the accelerator pump. It usualy fires right up after that.

You may want to start by checking your valve adjustment.

Not starting cold is one of the first signs of the intake valves being too tight.

Have you done the CCC mods and rejetted the bike or is it stock? Before you check the valves, I would answer that question first.

Cold. Turn the fuel on, choke on, lean the bike over past 45deg for the count of 4 (fuel should dribble on your foot). 3 quick twists of the throttle and hit the button. should start right up. If it starts then dies give it a couple more twists on the throttle and try again.

If you have not checked your valves i would do so. It takes about 30-45 min to do and costs nothing but your time.

FYI:

Turns out it was one of the intake valves.

WAY OUT OF ADJUSTMENT!

Replaced the shim, starts and runs easy.
