xr 650r shock rebuild

Hi, Ive been reading this forum for while, I just bought a used 650r for a fix up project, and the rear shock is blown. Ive been looking on e-bay, but haven't found a replacement. Where would be the best place to send my old shock to be rebuilt? Thank's for any suggestions.

Just take it to your local suspension guy or gal. If you go to your local riding area you should be able to get a few leads, also a good time to have it sprung properly if not already done.

Ive tried that, I live in a small town, and they have no idea, they just want to sell me a new one.

well ship it to precision concepts or the like, call first they should easily be able to get you riding again shock service should be relatively inexpensive.

It IS easy to rebuild the shock,but you might need to replace the shaft bushing in the seal head. That can be a little tricky for someone who never done one.

I personaly get all my suspension parts from Race tech.

Do it yourself! Best rebuild out there! The shim stack for the compression stack on the forks have been changed but, has not been updated on the web page. Desert race looks like this now:

Do it yourself. It's pretty easy for the most part, the only real hangup I have ran into at this point is I can't find anyone locally to fill it with nitrogen, so I guess I'm going to suck it up and by a tank from the welding place and set it up so I can keep the shock pressure up all the time.

Give Jay of Sasquatch suspensions a call. He rebuild a KLR650 for me, and did an amazing job on it. He stands by his work if anything is ever less than satisfactory. That being said, as others have said, doing it yourself isn't that hard. Plus, I've been seeing them go on eBay for $150-$250 lately.

What kind of setup for nitrogen do you have? Right now I'm just keeping about air in the bladder at about 40 psi until I can get setup.

Also, derailing the thread a little bit more, I got my shock back on today. It's still going to be a couple of weeks before I can pull the bike out of the garage, but I did sit on it and work the shock a little bit just to feel it since I've never sat on "real" suspension. I put in the desert race setup and have a 11kg spring. Felt a little bit softer, but the entire stroke felt steadier than the wore out stock spring and fluid.

The pressure of Nitrogen is very importent and controls how much stictation of the valve and the flow through the compression adjustment valve. If you live in So. Cal. I have a portable nitrogen setup with adjustable victor regulator.

If you're anywhere near an airport, stop by a maintenence hangar and ask if a mechanic will fill it with nitrogen for you. Nitrogen is used for everything on aircraft and most outfits would be happy to help you out. ?

Unfortunately I'm not near SoCal and not near an airport with a maintenance hangar, I'm in BFE. The only other solution besides buying a setup is taking it to a bike shop next week that does suspension, but I think at this point I'd be better off just buying a setup so I can have it available anytime I need it.

I know this is kinda old and hope you've got it sorted, but in case not, most any local bike shop should have a nitrogen tank and be able to fill it. Usually ranges from free to $15.

Also, many car dealers have nitrogen, I wanna say that all BMW dealers now use it when they fill cage tires.

Better bicycle shops will also have it for rebuilding bicycle shocks.

i know this is old post but is this for the Forks or the shock ?
