2007 xr650l countershaft seal replacement

I have oil leaking from my countershaft seal so I bought a new one and thought I could replace it myself. I cannot get the old one out and am afraid to damage something by force. The manual I have is no help.

Any suggestions?

Drill two small holes in the old seal. Run a wood screw in each hole just deep enough that they grip. Grab each screw with a pair of pliers and pull the old seal out.

It will pay to figure out why it leaked- this is not common on the XRL.

nice technique....I've just stuck whatever kind of screwdriver at whatever angle would work to try to pry it out.....never know if/how it's gonna work, but eventually it gets out.....your way is much better (600r and 650 r, never 650L)
