Should I run a 450 size rear wheel and tire?

I searched for a thread that could shed some light on this but could not find one?

I want to pull the trigger on a new set of DNA rims and it seems that everyone is buying the 450 size for the rear.

What are the pros and cons of putting on the 450 size rim and tire on my 2010 250?

250 rear wheel size = 100/90-19

450 rear wheel size = 120/80-19

Those are actually tire sizes. The wheel sizes are 1.85"x 19" for the 250, and 2.15"x19" for the 450.

You can run the 2.15" on the 250 and put several different size tires on them, but running a 120/80 and even a 110/90 would be extra strain on the motor. Unless you have a built motor you're best staying with a 100/90 or 110/80 tire size.

A 110/80 is designed for the smaller stock rim and is a good combo of extra width without adding too much weight.

If you go to large on the rear you can add as much as 2 lbs to the wheel and that along with too much traction will lessen acceleration.

250 would have tobe a fire breather to pull a 450 size tire. Another con alot of people don't know is with a larger and taller tire also throws off the ride height/geometry of the rear suspension.

True, a really wide tire wont roll into a turn as well and wants to climb out of ruts and will mess with the bikes geometry.

Pretty much agree, I won't change my 1.85, unless I go with the FX Wheelset in the future, they only offer the 2.15, I think that's where 501's having the issue DNA doesn't have 1.85's either???

Not to contradict what others are saying, only to share my own experience.

I have run the 450 rear tires on 2 of my 250 F's and I didn't notice a thing other than it hooked up great and looks mean! I race top level intermediate and got several holeshots on it last summer and handled great.

We also bought an ex MotoSport Outlet SX team bike and it had an Excel/Talon 450 rear wheel on it. Possibly they just installed it to sell the bike???

One other thing to consider is that 450 wheel sets are much easier to sell when you move on to your next bike.

Lastly, Dunlop is making a 110/80-19 sizes which is meant for the 125/250fs when using the wider 2.15 rear rims

I had a cr250 (2T) and purchased the 2.15(450) DNA set of rims. I had a Michilin 130 on it!

I took the same rims and put them on my crf250 with a 100 size tire and it works perfectly fine! I had the bigger michilin on the 250f briefly and it worked well, but I like the 100 series tire much better.

Not so much that but more of the height, it makes the bike sit higher messing up preload head tube angle etc. It can all be compensated for but overall it is better to run the proper sized tire.

Something I wanted to clarify- I ran a 450 wheel set, but the rear tire was the standard 250F 100/90/19 .
