what is this sandy like gunk on my cylinder head

Recommended Posts

When I was pulling the spark plug I noticed this hard greasy sandy material inside where my spark plug sets. Any idea what it is?

I dont think it has a name. Just clean it off without any dropping in the hole.

Slight seepage of combustion byproduct under the sparkplug gasket, it wont be good to get any debris in the cyl., especially sand. I usually either clean around the plug with brakeclean and air or presurre wash it before pulling the plug. just thread the plug back in halfway and clean it with something.

I get some compressed air and shoot it in through the drain hole with the plug in.

Be careful not to get anything in the head if you use another method.

If you think you may have dropped some debris kick it over without the plug in and it shold fly out the hole.

alright so I'm going to screw the plug about halfway in and clean it out with the hose, Then I'll kick it over a few times with the plug out to knock out any sand that may have fell in.

tighten the plug if you are going to shoot water in there.

If your just using compressed air you should be good not fully tightening the plug.

Just remember, you are trying to clean the area that the gasket seals against and tightening the plug on top of the stuff wont help.
