Rings for a CP Piston

Recommended Posts

I want to change the rings on a CP piston. Will the standard Honda rings do or do you have to use the proper CP ones? I have a set of new honda rings but would have to order the cp ones in which could take a while to arrive (UK).

Did you really ask this???

IF you have a CP piston, you have to use their rings.

Actually, there's a possibility that the stock rings will work. If you have a caliper/micrometer you can compare the critical dimensions of each ring set. The CP CRF450 piston uses a CPN2 ring set (1mm x 1.2mm x 2.0mm)

OK here is my reasoning for asking this question.

1. CP are a custom piston manufacturer therefore by definition they will not be making large quantities of CRF pistons.

2. Chances are they do not make rings for the CRF piston. (Many of the aftermarket pistons I have bought in the past have come with RIK rings in the box.)

3. Chances are that they make the piston to suit the Honda rings so that they can get their rings from some of the specialist piston ring manufacturers in small quantities at a reasonable price.

Based on these assumptions it would be reasonable to suggest that the Honda rings would fit the CP piston. I put the post on in the hope that someone with experience of CP pistons might have checked this out in the past and could confirm they did/did not fit.

Of course the chances are my assumptions are total rubbish!
