770Kaw250f Posted April 5, 2010 How many of you remove both drain plugs when changing the oil? What does the small one do?
jwhite66 Posted April 5, 2010 The small plug drains the oil under the crank( maybe 2 to 4 oz) Most of the time i only drain the main plug. If you drain the small bolt be careful not to over tighten / strip the threads.

numroe Posted April 5, 2010 I always have undone the front one at the same time. I've changed the oil about 30 times now. I also torque the little front plug up pretty lightly. Just my fingers on the tee bar handle. Never come loose yet, or felt overly loose when undoing it. But I'm touching WOOD here! 👍 But no huge deal if you dont touch the small plug. BTW: I have a magnetic drain plug in the main hole. It's always has a very fine build up of metal on it. Like a grey film over it. Cost about $10 on ebay. Good insurance I believe. I've done 190 hrs and gear box working nicely.

Themitch Posted April 7, 2010 service manual for my 06 said to do both. Small being the oil sump pump? When I let the bigger bolt drain, I took out the smaller and it still drained alot of oil. So yes, I would remove the small bolt too. No sense putting new oil in over old oil. It'll just contaminate.
