Suspension-a personal choice?

After recently servicing my forks and shocks, I spent a few hours dialing in the damping.

Here's the question...What am I really looking for? I can hit an 8" log at speed, and not even feel it, but the forks, and overall ride seem too soft, and vague.

On "G-outs" the ride feels too soft; I go completely through the travel like hitting a big marshmallow.

Do I tighten up the compression and start shuffling the shims to keep the compliance for the logs and roots but keep the ride "firm"?
