some yz125 questions

Recommended Posts

hi, a have a few questions on yz125's, i keep getting conflicting answers on what i read so figured i would ask:

99-04 basically the same bike? are the earlier ones prone to cylinder head issues? which years are prone to frames cracking or is it all of them?

05+ is it 10lbs lighter than the earlier ones? for trail riding would the steel frame actually be a bit better being less rigid?

top end rebuilds, i just read the piston needs to be done every 15 hours i am assuming this is the extreme end of things, how many hours can i reasonably expect to get out of a piston on a trail ridden 125? just ballpark, 15 hrs would be way to expensive 👍

and the fun question, which one would u pick?🤣

the 05 is slightly over my budget and i think there is a pretty good chance no title since its considerably less than any aluminum ive found yet.

thanx

The Ali framed bike is a better engine and the chassis is alot easier to maintain.

Pistons are around the 15-20 hour mark unless you want to take a chance on them grenading. Ring around 8-10 hrs.

I trail rode my '99 for a year and a half before I did the top end. I rode 2 or 3 weekends a month on it. I don't have an hour meter on it but I'm sure I was up around 40 or 50 hours I would guess

Cylinder still looked pretty good and cleaned up with just scotch bright

👍 another gross exageration.

So that means I cant get 2 weekends of trail/moto out of my 125? c'mon.

  • 2 months later...

I change my airfilter every ride, use the best premix I can get @ 30:1 and make sure the jetting is spot on, sometimes a tad too rich.

I use OEM pistons and ride 25-30h or until I notice a lack of power.

Oh and I ride on mx tracks and in sandpits.
