Cr500 Gearshift spindle oil seal replacement??

Recommended Posts

Hey, my Cr500 has sprung an oil leak from the crankcase seal for the gearshift spindle. I was wondering if it is necessary to remove the spindle in order to remove the oil seal, or am I able to remove the seal somehow and pop the new one in without taking half of the engine apart? Thanks!

You should be able to remove the seal without going any further than taking the shift lever off. I use an o ring pick to go up under the seal and pop it out. If that doesn't work you can carefully insert a small flathead screwdriver between the outside of the seal and the inside of the case and and gently bend the seal in a little and it should come right out. Don't worry about tearing up the old seal but be very careful with the case.

Before you install the new seal wrap a piece of electrical tape around the spines on the shaft so you don't damage the new seal. Slide the new seal in place and tap it into the case with a deep well socket.

Thanks for the response! I'll have to pick up an O-ring pick sometime. I actually came up with an idea to carefully drill a tiny hole into the seal and insert a wood screw to pull it out. It actually worked pretty well (the tip of the screw gouged the case a tad, but it's not in a bad place)! Needless to say it is a little risky, but I think I pulled it off successfully. haha I took some pics of the process. It only took about 5 minutes. I definitely need to pick up an O-ring pick though!

You can see the screw mark in the fourth pic. It's the tiny dot by the spindle. lol

every seal in a cr500 engine can be replaces without splitting the cases, very easy procedures.

Sweet! That is very nice to know actually. The less work the better I always say. 👍

I guess after looking at the pics I took, I noticed that the oil leak looked a little odd for having been coming from the gearshift spindle. So I took a closer look, and as it turns out. It was the drive sprocket seal that's leaking. Oh well, that gearshift seal need to be replaced anyway! lol

That seal is even easier to replace because it is so big. Be sure to replace the little rubber seal that resides inside the collar that the seal rides on!!!

Have fun!
