ynotabike Posted April 12, 2010 Hello everyone in moto land...I purchased a 91xr200 that was rebuilt and the guy said it was running good for a while then just started cutting out.He said he "put a nail in the pulse generator" but I done see what he did. I am not sure if the stator is wired correctly. Any one have wiring schematics or diagnosis tips for this bike? All comments welcome!
Chuck. My Rides (3) Posted April 12, 2010 Welcome to TT The ignition systems are pretty bullett proof on these bikes, only a few things go wrong: Bad plug, replace and test. Plug cap not engaging core of the plug wire, unscrew and cut 1/2" off plug wire, screw cap back on wire with a bit of silicon grease for a seal. Bad kill switch or shorted kill switch wiring. Advance mechanism sticking Pulse generator gap wrong, should be 0.007". Cam timing slipped. corroded wire connections, clean and use dielectric grease. Mis wired; but on the 86+ bikes the wiring harness has plugs rather than each wire having a bullett connecter end so mis wiring is difficult to do.
ynotabike Posted April 12, 2010 that helps with the generator gap...looks WAY more than .007!!
Chuck. My Rides (3) Posted April 13, 2010 Another ignition problem that I encountered for the first time on a eBay engine; the shaft that the pulsor magnet rides on was broken at its base, that sure messed up the pulsor gap!! I discovered this while cleaning and lubing the advance mechanism.
