Rear Linkage bearings

I just bought a '99 YZ400 used and went to grease the rear bearings. When I was putting a collar back in, some of that wax-like stuff peeled up off of the needles. I carefully peeled up all of the wax, greased it up and put it back together. Everything feels tight. What exactly is the purpose of that wax besides holding the needles in? Did I screw up any tolerances by removing it? Just figured I would ask before I put it all back together again. Thanks for any info!

It's a solid lubricant. It's ok to remove it, and it's ok to leave it in.
