Fork spring shims - preload

Recommended Posts

Anyone know about shimming the fork springs?

I can't seem to find a thread on it. Anyway, I have them off and I am going to change the oil, to something a bit thicker. I know there is an adjuster on the bottom as well. I want to preload the springs a bit if I can and was wondering what works for others. If I remember right, it was a PVC shim about 3/4" that goes on top of the spring ??

Anyone have info or remember a specific thread?

Preloading does not do a lot as you are still left with the weak spring rate. You really need stiffer springs. You can get that with new springs or by cutting a bit out of your existing ones and adding a spacer to make up for what was cut out.

The bottom adjuster is the slow speed compression. The rebound is fixed and can only be changed with oil viscosity.

Sometimes it keeps the forks up in the stroke a bit though helping the balance of the bike..
