Washington Brit riding western TAT & CDT: Ride buddies, route suggestions, parking, tent space

Recommended Posts

A FEW RECENT POSTS OF MINE HAVE DISAPPEARED, I PRESUME BECAUSE OF TECHNICAL ISSUES. SO HERE THEY ARE AGAIN! SINCE I POSTED THIS, I'VE RECEIVED A FAIR BIT OF FEEDBACK, BUT SADLY IT'S ALL GONE BEFORE I SAVED IT ELSEWHERE. IF YOU CAN POST AGAIN, OR FOR THE 1ST TIME THAT WOULD BE SUPERB.

Hi guys

I’m flying to/from Phoenix AZ from Manchester in England for 7.5 weeks between mid July and early September this year. As you can see from the map

usa2010mapWithRoute.jpg

I’m intending to ride the western half of the Trans Am Trail and the length of the Continental Divide Trail (Lines on the map aren’t wholly accurate). I’m borrowing a Suzuki DR400e with soft bags from Phoenix AZ and my trip starts and finishes there.

I have a couple of questions/requests that you might be able to help me with:

Route suggestions: The yellow CDT and red western TAT are pretty much set in stone. However it might be nice to take a few diversions. Do you have any suggestions? A friend told me about the Lolo Motorway in Idaho. Any other ideas? The blue dotted lines are very vague “liaison sections”. Do you know any good dirt roads en route?

Ride buddies: Any one in the same area at the same time as me and want to team up? Will aim to camp (ideally free camp) as much as possible. I ride a steady pace off and on pavement and want to take in the sights and sounds. I can ride long distances, but with the DRZ seat the way it is, my butt will be enforcing regular breaks!

Bike parking : I need to park the bike and kit between July 23rd and August 9th , ideally close to an airport (with connections to SFO and LAX) in Oregon/ northern Nevada. Can you help? Have you got a little space in your garage/ round the back of your house?

Tent space: If you live close to or on the western TAT or CDT or liaison sections, have you got any space in your yard where I could pitch my very small tent?

I have the following Timeline which might be of interest.

Sun 11th July: Arrive Phoenix, AZ from England

Ride east to NM and north to CO on CDT (yellow line) and northwest on TAT (red line) towards OR (definitely including side trip to Bonneville Salt Flats)

Fri 23rd July: Park bike and fly from Oregon or northern Nevada (?) to San Francisco CAL to meet wife and son for 2.5 weeks of car-bound tourism between SFO and Los Angeles.

Mon 9th August: Fly from LAX back to bike (in OR or northern Nevada)

Possibly (but less likely) 13 to 15 August: Horizonsunlimited Canada West meet at Nakusp, BC (too far off route in time available?)

Ride to northern end of CDT (yellow line) and head south to NM (quite likely to include attending Horizonsunlimited Colorado meet at Silverton, 27-29 August)

Fri September 03: depart Phoenix, AZ back to England

Any comments/tips/suggests very much appreciated.

Ride safely

Chris

SINCE THIS POST I ALSO ASKED ABOUT PARKING NEAR MEDFORD, OR AND WAS ALSO WANT TO NOW POST THIS:

Bike parking Missoula, MT, or Spokane, WA, 23rd July to 9th August?

Hi

If you’ve been following my various post recently ref parking my borrowed DRZ close to different airports and think that I should make my mind up, I apologise!

As I’ve written above:

for my CDT/TAT/Oregon Discovery/Lolo Motorway loop starting and finishing in Phx, AZ, different options seem to be coming into my head daily. My latest plan is to head east from PHX, AZ and meet the CDT in northern NM and do the loop anticlockwise. I have gps tracks for everything so am not restricted in having to do the TAT east to west via the usual roadbook. If I am able to park the bike near Missoula, MT or Spokane, WA, I think my timings for things to see and do en-route might be better.

I have to join my wife and son for a family vacation in SoCal between 23rd July to 9th August and hence wish to park a DRZ400e with minimal luggage (v small and compact: fits easily into corner of garage or yard) close to either Missoula, MT or Spokane, WA so I can catch flights to/from SFO/LAX.

Nothing is set in stone... I really don’t want to mess anyone around and really appreciate if anyone can help me out.

Cheers

Chris

TBS,

Your route cutting across E OR and SE WA takes your across some of the OBDR (Oregon Backcountry Discovery Route) that runs the N/S length of Eastern OR.

There have been several people on the NW TT forum that have done it as well as people in the ADVrider website. Just google OBDR, OR and you'll get plenty of information. Also, a local company called cycoactive used to have many stories on these routes with pictures and maps but since they have changed their website, I can't access them. Here is their info:

http://www.cycoactive.com/Company/Contact/

I also have the gps files for some of the route, but since I have not done the actual route, I can't verify that they are solid routes for you.

Hope this helps,

mike

Hi Mike

Thanks for the heads up on that. I have some OBDR tracklogs from a chap on Advrider and also found some on gpsxchange.com I'm going to try to link these with the Lolo Motorway.

cheers

Chris

Many thanks to all who have commented in this public forum or PMed/emailed me with route suggestions and kind offers of bike parking or allowing me to camp in your yard or sleep on your couch/in your guest room. Below is what I intend to do. It’s not entirely set in stone, but more like in slightly soggy cement/semi solid molten lava...

I will try to hook up with as many people as I can, but I’m sure you appreciate, I’ll struggle to deviate too much from my route and need to keep my daily mileage up, particularly on the CDT. You’ll be able to work out when I’m likely to be in the area.

overviewmap2010trip.jpg

You won’t need telling that the colours represent the following:

Green: CDT

Purple: western TAT

Light blue: ODT

Yellow: Lolo

Dark Blue: Magruder

I’m intending on doing the loop anticlockwise. Riding buddies for some of it/ for a day very welcome.

Timings:

Sun 11th July: Arrive Phoenix, AZ from England and do final tweaks on bike

13 July: Head East and meet Continental Divide Trail at Pie Town, NM (I like the name)

14 July to 23 July: Ride north on the CDT, possibly with side trip on Maguder

Fri 23rd July: Park bike in Missoula, MT and fly to SFO, CA

Vacation with family in SoCal

Mon 9th August: Fly LAX back to Missoula, MT

9 Aug to 27 Aug: Head south west connecting Lolo Motorway with Oregon Discovery Trail to where it meets the TAT, west to the Pacific and double back and ride the TAT south east to Silverton, CO

27 to 29 August: Attend Horizonsunlimited Colorado meeting at Silverton, CO

29 Aug to 02 September: Ride Silverton to Phoenix, AZ

Fri September 03: depart Phoenix, AZ back to England

See you on the road,

Chris
