Restoration: 86 CR250R w/ pics!

Recommended Posts

I restored a bike that I consider one of the all-time, gnarliest bikes Honda ever made. I thought that I'd share my process. The truth is that it's just an excuse to show some bike-porn.?

This is how it looked when I brought it home. Mechanically, it was in GREAT shape and maintained very well.

I took the time to polish many of the metal parts, it became an obsession.

Radiators had to be professionally flushed because of corrosion issues from the water pump. Here's how it looked after I dremeled some of it out.

I had to JB weld the water pump

Painted hubs and new PRO WHEELS

I stripped and painted the frame. I covered it with several coats of polyurethane.

I added a custom skid plate ?

I liked my old-school bike so much that I had to make a twin out of my 450.

Great bike! I like the skid plate that you added on.

What rear rim did you use? (part #)

A buddy at a local shop ordered the wheels, so I'm not sure about the part #. I believe that it is a mid-90's KX250 wheel that he set me up with.

Thanks everyone for the nice words.?

Hey Delta41,

Where did you get the Showa decals for the front forks?

Do you happen to know where I can get a set of footpeg springs for the 86 250?

Honda does not carry this part anymore.

I live in Portugal so buying a used spring from Ebay and mailing it to Portugal is almost prohibitive.

Silver City, there's pics of the 450 in my Garage. Thanks man!

Rod, I didn't like the narrow stock footpegs. I replaced them with some pegs off of a YZ400/426. I think it was a 99 or 2000 model. I got them off of ebay. I used a Dremel to take a small piece off and they fit perfectly. Much better!!:excuseme: I got the SHOWA decals off of ebay also. It was from a seller out of Australia. I've had a few sets from him. They are decent quality and his postage was fairly fast.

Thanks VinceDC, I had a 86 CR125 also, years ago. I wish I still had it.
