Trouble Downloading from GPS

Recommended Posts

I posted this on the General forum but got no responses:

With my new computer I can no longer transfer data from my Garmin into Mapsource. The GPS is a Garmin Legend HCx. When I try to open from device and use "auto detect" I get the message:

"

Unable to find a GPS

Please ensure the following and try again

1. The GPS is connected to a serial port

2. The GPS is turned on

3. The GPS interface option is set to Garmin or host mode

"

It is connected to a USB, turned on but I'm not sure about the 3rd one. The only interface option I have is "USB mass storage"

It worked fine with my old computer; I'm thinking it has something to do with a security setting. I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks

I too have the same problem assumed it was the USB cable I bought, used to use the serial port, awaiting a response. You might try GPS exchange or D37 Dual Sport forum, lots of knowledgeable folks there.

Or you could try the DS/ADV forum here.

If the device is configured as a mass storage device, then it should appear as a drive in your devices list.

Look in Windows Explorer (file manager), and see if the device (or its memory card) is appearing as a drive. It should be.

If it is, you can manipulate its files as with any other drive in your list.

I am sure you have been round-and-round with it, but there has to be a menu setting that switches from mass storage to Garmin or host modes.

Do you get the "USB connect" audio when you connect/disco the GPS? If so, Windows is at least partially recognizing it. Check Device Manager as it may need a driver, or driver update.

Instead of "auto detect" ttry forcing a detection mode, and see if that allows full recognition.

Thanks Phuzz. It doesn't show up as a drive but it does make the audio when I turn the GPS on. So my PC at least knows it's there. I sent the question into Garmin tech services so hopefully I'll get an answer.

Any update on this BigRichard? I misplaced my Legend, found it last night and am trying to get it to connect to the new USB only laptop but no luck. I'm going to try the update that smitty suggested, was also suggested on GPS exchange. May have to connect to my desktop serial port for update first though.

Did your old computer have an older version of windows whereas the new computer has vista or I think windows 7. I think the software with the garmin will not recognize the new versions and that may be the problem. Garmin may have a patch or software upgrade that would fix this.

If it is something more serious and it's a problem with the unit itself, I found that Garmin will stand behind their product. My Rino was 6 years old at the time, started eating batteries in 15 minutes and the unit got HOT. The website said it would be $99 to fix but when I contacted them directly, I paid only the shipping to them. They covered the fix and return shipping. Good company and customer service.

I updated the unit via Garmin and finally got it to work, will not work with the USB cord I bought but does through the parallel cord via a USB adapter. Preey slow but gets it done.

I ended up sending an email to Garmin's sofeware support. They sent a link to an update with instructions. It works fine now. You would think that they could give you a pop-up message telling you that you need the update.

You would think that they could give you a pop-up message telling you that you need the update.

Software/firmware being what it is, especially if a bug is caused or manifests due to an update/change in some other component like the OS logic for USB communication, can be hard to detect an error without the corrective update already in place.

Hard to get a popup for corrective action when your installed versions aren't aware, or updated to a newer level with the logic to recognize the error; its just a show-stopping error with little clues at that point.

Many manufacturers will advise to keep up-to-date on system-side software/apps (but only update firmware if something does not function properly since firmware faults/problems tend to "brick" a device) At least this may help to sometimes give the popups you mention.

Either way, glad it got fixed as GPSs are a natural companion to our bikes. čśĆ

This is the message they sent me:

Please click on the link below to run the Mapsource update. Do not have

Mapsource open when running this update.

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

You want to click on the 57.36 download and run. After this is completed it will give you the option to Launch Mapsource. This unit has to be connected to the computer using a USB cable. Please use a different USB

port if the computer is not finding the device after the update.

I got mine to work (etrex legend) but with a serial/USB adapter. Will try your link when I get a chance. Also contacted the folks I got the cord from and they sent me some drivers. Hopefully one of these will work better, the adapter is super slow, but at least I'm back in business.

What's the current status??

... and did you take the GPS, and USB to another computer to make sure it works (after downloading Trip and Waypoint manager again)? I know it's a pain, but... that'd narrow down the problems and troubleshooting.

Mine works fine after the software update. I haven't heard if Nayther has his problem figured out yet.
