Tire size/ recomendations

Recommended Posts

Looking for some tires for my 08 650L. Been doing some research and thinking im going to go with avon distanzias in a 90/90-21 front and a 120/80-18 rear. I mostly do street riding adventuring off road slightly with some gravel and dirt roading. Still on the stock death wings with really no complaints about em so far besides a little head shake at 60mph +. I want to stick with tires real close to the stock size as i think it looks and feels perfect at its height right now. Anyone have any feed back on these tires in this size or any other recommendations for me?

The sizes you chose are correct.

As for what tires, on these bikes, it largely doesn't matter. What I mean is, the bike really doesn't even go 90 mph. You can run knobbies on the highway or basically street tires in the dirt. If you honestly ride more road, using a 70-90% road tire will be much smoother and last a lot longer.

Choice is yours, the bike will get you through pretty much anything.

(watch out for deep mud though, it's hard to pry the L from the powerful mud suction and drag it to firmer ground)

Here's a nice picture of my L set up with my dualsport tires - stock rims.

When the weather cools, I prefer a more aggressive tread pattern.

Sounds like experience based advice

I can imagine it's enough to make you blow a gasket ๐Ÿ™‚

Hey Rob.......what DS tires are those---the top picture?.๐Ÿ™‚

They are Kenda K761 tires. I am actually getting ready to sell that wheel set but I like the way they handle, not to mention their low price tag. Perfect for ther L.

One piece of advice. Don't pay too much attention to the size numbers on the tires. The actual size can vary quite a bit between manufacturers that all show the same on the tire. If you are concerned with the actual dimensions go to the manufacturers web site and look up the tires. Most will show the real size when installed.

For high speed stability the smaller the diameter the better. If you go and look at Avon's website you will see that the 120/80-18 is recommended for a 2.5 to 3 inch rims. Your bike has a 2.15 inch rim. The effect of the smaller rim kind of pinches the tire. This results in a more rounded profile and less of a contact patch on the road. It also makes for a shorter life. The 110/80 or the 4.6 are indicated for a 2.15 rim. I think I would go with the 4.60-18 as it has a one step higher weight rating. It is 1/10 of an inch taller and 3mm narrower. The 110 is 9/10 of an inch less in diameter and will be slightly more stable at speed.

Tires that "look right" are almost always too large for best pavement use because of the narrow width of dirt bike rims.

Those Distanzias do stick to the pavement really well. Off road not so much.

4.60" ='s alittle over 116mm(no calculator handy for exact #) thats closer to 120mm than 110mm....right.I could be misinterpreting your post?.๐Ÿ™‚

I was reading off of the actual numbers on the Avon website. The 4.6 was recommended for a 2.15 rim while the 120 is for a 2.5. It's best to always go for the numbers given for installed dimensions and not rely too much on the numbers on the sidewall.

This is from the Avon website. It's hard to show column data here, but I'll try. The MT is the recommended rim, the next is the rim range. The next two are the width in mm and inches followed by the diameter in mm and inches. The last is the tread depth. A you can see the 120/80 tire is actually 125mm wide. That's what I mean by don'e rely on the numbers on the side of the tire.
