chain rust

Recommended Posts

I've heard kerosene and some very fine steel wool (scrub GENTLY). I'd start with kerosene and a grunge brush though, that can usually take care of the light surface rust.

Update: Scotch Brite pad, not steel wool.

I'd skip the steel wool for sure...not only for what rob mentioned, but them things tend to shed, and all of those pieces will rust. Not something you want on your chain.

After a few years of poor maintenance, my chain was looking pretty shabby. Big pile of rags, a nylon brush, and a jug of kerosene made it look almost new again. Follow up with a good chain wax and bob's you're uncle...
