Taddy Blazusiak Opens 2010 GEICO EnduroCross Series with a win in Las Vegas!

Geoff Aaron and Cory Graffunder rounded out the podium

Las Vegas, NV (July 17, 2010) – Taddy Blazusiak, the defending EnduroCross champion rode his Red Bull KTM to a hard fought victory over Geico, Christini backed Geoff Aaron. Zip Ty Husqvarna mounted Cory Graffunder came out on top of a dog fight for the final podium spot over FMF KTM’s Mike Brown and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Justin Soule.

Aaron, the ten time National Trials champion got the day started by setting the fastest time during the Pioneer Hot Lap that determine the gate picks for the evenings heat races. He also earned a $500 bonus from Rekluse clutch by being the fastest rider using their auto clutch. Mike Brown and Cody Webb, one of the top American Trials riders showed that he is quickly learning how to race EnduroCross by posting the third fastest time.

Blazusiak, Brown and Graffunder were the heat race winners and earned the best gate picks for the main event. The biggest surprise of the night was the fact that Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ricky Dietrich, the 2008 EnduroCross champion, did not qualify for the main after crashing while in a qualifying spot during the Last Chance Qualifier. He was joined on the sidelines by Lucas Oil backed Colton Haaker, last year’s E3 Spark Plugs Junior Champion that also had a very rough evening.

Blazusiak earned the $750 Girardi Wealth management holeshot award but was quickly passed by Geoff Aaron. The two riders swapped the lead several times during the first half of the race until Aaron made a small mistake and fell over in the GEICO rock garden. That gave Blazusiak a small lead that he managed hold for the remainder of the race. The battle for third included Graffunder, Brown, Soule, Gary Sutherlin, Kyle Redmund, and Cody Webb. Webb appeared to have the final podium spot under control before crashing in the Monster water hole and then Graffunder temporarily handed the position away but fought back to get on the podium. Brown rode a steady race to earn forth position ahead of Soule. All of these riders had a shot at the podium and provided some great racing action for the enthusiastic crowd.

The points system is really similar to your basic AMA SX event... In EX like SX the top 5-10 finishers are fairly consistent... obviously the better you do the more points you receive... where it gets tricky is in the LCQ! if you work your way up through the night show to the LCQ you actually receive points based on how you finish... (even if you don’t make it to the main) this give the riders seated outside the top 10 a chance be prequalified for the next round... This link will actually show you how the points break down!

Hope this helps a little!

Cool, I'll check that out. I'm essentially wondering if that round pretty much spells Ricky's hopes for winning out the window - of course, it is EX, so anything can happen!

Would like to see Cory G. get some 1st places this year.

Ok I think I'm more confused than I was before. It also begs another question. If there are only 3 heat races, and only the top 2 transfer from each heat to the main, and if there is only 1 lcq, and only the top spot transfers to the lcq, then I count a total of 7 racers for the Main event, but it appears that there were more than that?

Yeah, I am confused.

I took my 9 year old to this and the race was good as always. Geoff Aaron rides super smooth and nothing seems to rattle that guy. His smooth riding style does not make him look fast, but he picks good lines and is big enough to muscle the bike up and over when he needs to. At his size, I don't know how in the world Jamie Lanza gets through that stuff. He's obviously got a lot of skill. I also think the sport needs David Knight back in it however. As much as I like Taddy, short of Aaron, I don't see anyone else that has the same skill set and drive to give that guy a run for his money.

Aaron does really well but he is a little older (37) and he doesn't have a lot of enduro experience to give him that speed between obstacles that Knight would have IMO. I think Aaron is really good, though, he just is more of a trials guy without a lot of enduro experience as far as I know at least. Of course Taddy beat Knight also so who knows. It seems like Knight wants to concentrate on the area where he is best and isn't so interested in EX at this time.
