MX starts on 60HP electric bikes?

Recommended Posts

What will MX starts be like when everyone is racing 60HP electric bikes (power and torque is limited by the class rules), which weigh 160 lbs, and have one gear and no clutch?

I would guess that the gate drops, everyone pins the throttle, and then the whole pack arrives at the first corner at pretty much the same time. Holeshots might depend totally on rider weight, reflexes, and gate and tire choice.

The bikes would be rather quick too. Totally flat torque curves. Totally blow away a 2010 450F in every way - except the noise.

A small break through in battery technology (fuel cells or whatever) and perhaps this becomes very realistic - at least from an engineering perspective. ?

Good point. No clutch, but careful throttle control.

On second thoughts, the bikes could have a power curve switch on the handle bars, and/or traction control.

haha that was pretty funny.. If mx ever went all electric id quit.. How weird would it be hearing them go around the track

You thinking that twice as fast as any MX bike today, 5 times more dangerous, 10 times more equality in machinery, but not enough noise, so boring?

where do you get those numbers? maybe 5 times as dangerous cause your battery breaks and you get acid all over yourself...

TRACTION CONTROL!?!?! when I'm doing burnouts and donuts I don't want my bike to decide it doesn't want to.

No I'm thinking about those flying cars bases on mars and hope and change everybody predicts. If they ever did perfect an electric dirt bike that could go 45 minutes society will have deemed dirt bikes to dangerous and a drain on government supplied health care by then. No way future econazi government officials will let dirt be used for racing on. When internal combustion is no longer primary mode of transportation individuals will not be able to afford frivilous items like dirt bikes in the socialist utopia of the future.

lithium batteries dont really have acid in them, but they do explode when over charged

I can't see it ever happening. MX has been and always will be a gasoline powered motorsport. I'm confident that AMA motocross will always involve internal combustion engines, it's just too large of an aspect of the sport. I mean I don't think we'll ever see electric powered NASCAR so I don't think MX will be any different.

I think electric bikes will become more popular (but still very limited) with certain niches in the consumer market but I don't think pro's will ever be riding them. Alot of people (like myself) like bikes because of their ability to take us out into the middle of nowhere. I can ride 75 miles, go back to the car, fill up my gas tank, and then head right back out. I wouldn't be able to go back to the car and charge my battery up in 5 minutes.

The racing is going to be sooner then later. One of the larger manufacturers will come up with a way to make it exciting for the rider and also pimp thier product. Dont be suprised to see a place like K1 Speed go cart tracks start carrying electric supermotards for some indoor racing. How fun would that be?

have 3, 5lb batteries..... easy as that

Its all about what they make money on. Just like 2 strokes and how they were weeded out.

If and only if they ever make an electric dirtbike capable of competing against our 250/450f's , It will probably be stupid expensive and we have to choose not to buy it.

But i think this is far off

Isn't lithium an alkali? In other words it'll explode when it hit's water. Now of course they'll be contained but a small crack in your battery casing and you have an explosion.

Electrics would be awesome. The loud noise of a gasser, while awesome, gets annoying on loud rides when you just wanna cruise. Same thing with the vibrations, etc.

what is wrong with you

water wont blow it up, and they are packed really well, and dont make much heat while running

I would love to test ride one. You can turn traction control on and off. Another benefit with an electric bike is you can hook your lap top up to it and do whatever you want! lol Kind of like power commanders. lol

But like someone already mentioned....I'll still be on my CR 250, because technology and I do not get along. lol

I don't see why there is anyone against an electric bike. 1) the benefits have already been stated by those who like the idea and 2) if you prefer gas over electric, so be it, you don't need to buy one. The cold hard truth is they will take the place of gas in the future at some point. What will you do in 10 years when you are paying $10-$12 per gallon for gas...or more? What will you do when gas becomes a rare commodity? Walk? ...we can't have that. We need alternatives.

In the next few years, if the technology improves and battery power on a motorcycle will give us a 3-4 hour ride time, I will be happy to try one. I don't have a problem with gas, but it won't be around forever.
